AI Search vs. Traditional Search

Search engines retrieve documents; AI search also has to explain and cite its synthesis.

Retrieval is not the whole product

Traditional search is optimized around finding pages. AI search is judged by whether the answer is useful, grounded, and inspectable. That means citations, quote boundaries, recency checks, and uncertainty handling matter as much as ranking.

Where traditional search wins

When users know what they are looking for, ranked links are fast and transparent. Search is also better when the user wants to compare primary sources directly instead of receiving a synthesis.

Where AI search wins

AI search helps when the question spans many sources or requires translation from documents into a decision. It should show its work, separate facts from inference, and make source inspection easy.
